Game: Evoland 2
Developer: Shiro Games
Genre: Action RPG
Platform: Utomik or Steam

Intro

Time is fluid in the world of Evoland 2, where each era is represented by a different graphic style. Whether in the past with Gameboy pixels or in the future with Final Fantasy 7 graphics, Evoland 2: A slight Time Continuum Disorder is set out to be the biggest love letter to retro gamers.
You play as Kuro, a young adventurer set out to solve the war between the Empire and the Demon world. Along the way you will make the typical RPG companions: the cutesy girl, the buff demon…etc. Time travel will bring you into the past and the future, which is stylized by a different graphics era. The past looks like an 8-bit game, while the future takes you to 32-bit realm.

Gameplay

Kuro’s adventure will be very familiar to fans of Zelda and Secret of Mana. Players will hack and slash their way through forests and castles, solving puzzles and interacting with colorful characters. The beauty behind the game is its ability to make fun of itself. Some of your missions include getting a part time job so you can afford to travel out of a city or escaping a castle undetected. Further missions have you fighting battles in a 2D  Link’s Adventure realm or delivering some sweet fisticuffs like Final Fight. It is through these little distractions that Evoland 2 reveals how much it wants to celebrate video games of the past.

Content

The game is incredibly charming and funny for anyone who understands the culture of retro gamers, but also manages to be clean and family friendly. There are no swear bombs, needless gore or females that wear revealing attire. Shiro games gets Kudos for this. It also helps to know that you interact with demons in this game, but they serve as a separate species and not a spiritual issue.

Review

Evoland 2 is successful in its mission to be a love letter to gamers. It also serves as a thirst quencher for anyone who cannot get enough Legend of Zelda or Chrono Trigger. While the game sacrifices some of its deepness for light hearted jokes and it won’t replace the Dragon Warrior series, everyone should get a chance to play this game.
