WAR IS HELL
OFP:DR is a game about global tensions erupting into war. The Chinese have taken control of an island belonging to the Russians and the American army was called to back them up. As a squad of trained soldiers, your job is to eliminate the enemy resistance and gain control of the mission objectives. You don't do this by going guns blazing. No. In OFP:DR you have to take your time, plan things out, and control your surroundings (including your men). After 1 Day of Play
I admit that I am more drawn to OFP's careful planning and delicate use of commands. Excites me that games don't have to be linear roads where you pick off men hiding behind barrels. Jumping right into this game I was given a much needed tutorial. Your squad walks to points on a map, until they reach the objective. Then they have different ways to succeed. In the tutorial you remove a nest of rebels using the grenade launcher on your rifle. Then you call in an airstrike on another group. Finally you have to command your team to flank the resistance and clear and LZ. If I had the patience to jog 2km out of the way, I could have cleared the side missions. Walking long distances in the sandbox arena is a big part of this game.
After Many Days of Play
I tackled the second and third mission and I am still thrilled with the learning curve. Every time I died (which was a lot), I had to find a new way to come at the situation. I realized that doing the grenade launcher was ineffective, because your enemy will be almost invisible, spread out and very far away. You have to get used to shooting at ants. A sniper rifle is key, unless you can sneak up on some unsuspecting enemies. Checkpoints are rare in any given level, but I didn't notice that being frustrating. In the second and third mission I got used to the objective of catching the enemy off guard and getting my men to flank them.
Conclusion
I believe what makes OFP:DR a good weekend killer because it was on sale for under $10 (I also got the sequel in the bundle). While the graphics and voice acting are wooden (even in 2009 standards), I like the idea behind it. The game feels professional and rewards those who use good strategy to solve missions.
RATING: BUY IT ON SALE
M Rated Content: Blood spatter and death by explosions prevalent. Lots of swearing through S and F bombs. Mature military topics.
